Spirit of America

Paddle, Sail, Power!

Spirit of America is the premier youth boating education program

Spirit of AmericaBeaufort Community Sailing and Boating/Junior Sailing of Beaufort is proud to announce that we are now the facilitator of Beaufort’s Spirit of America Program. This program has been offered in Beaufort County by the YMCA as a success for the past five years and will continue as a partnership with Beaufort Community Sailing and Boating/Junior Sailing of Beaufort, the YMCA of Beaufort County, the Port Royal Sound Foundation, and the Spirit of America Foundation.

Spirit of America is an innovative year round opportunity and educational experience for middle school aged students, 11-15 years of age, that combines a summer-camp atmosphere with classroom discipline.

Each program participant is exposed to sail, power, paddle, personal watercraft, and large vessel disciplines, rules and practice.  In addition, the students spend time in the classroom passing their state boating education course, a controlled environment of a pool and in natural settings to build up their confidence and competency.

We are in the business of providing a SAFE and educational introduction to our Country’s young people, their families and their communities, to all types of water based recreational activities in one of the most diverse “hands-on” Classrooms in America.

Our young people take part in a curriculum, which is directly tied to local, state, and national education (Common Core) Standards, next generation Science and Physical Education Standards, which include STEM components in a non-traditional classroom setting.  We provide education and direction to last a lifetime for all young persons.
See the Spirit of America website for more details about the program curriculum. spiritofamerica95.org.

Commitment to Program & Code of Conduct

There are limited spaces available and students will be taken on a first come, first serve basis. Students may only sign up for Spirit of America one time, for one week. Please sign up only if student is available to commit to the program, including attending the mandatory orientation meeting with a parent/guardian.
Students will be expected to adhere to a strict Code of Conduct. This includes always acting respectful and safe. Students are expected to come to camp each morning prepared with the proper attire and equipment, including water shoes, life jacket, water, and sun protection, and to behave in a manner that shows their priority for the safety of themselves and others. Examples of required behavior include wearing their life jacket and water shoes at all times on/near the dock and water and following the direction of the Spirit of America staff and volunteers. Students who do not adhere to expected behaviors will be expelled from the program with no refund.

Volunteer

Do you want to share your love of boating with our local youth? Are you a program graduate looking for more time in the program or on the water?

Please consider volunteering for Spirit of America! Volunteers are the heart and backbone of our program. Our program couldn’t exist without the support of fabulous volunteers who are give up their time to share their passion for the water. While most volunteers are adults, certain positions can also be filled by program graduates who want to come back as junior volunteers.

If you are interested, please fill out our Volunteer Questionnaire and Waiver.  The form collects emergency information, a liability waiver, your preferences for volunteering, and your availability for classes in 2018. Even if you are not ready to commit to days in 2018, please fill out the volunteer form so we can have your information and put you on our list of interested volunteers.
Spirit of America likes for all program volunteers to hold safe boating and current CPR/First Aid certificates. If you don’t currently have those, please fill out the form and let us know. We are working on opportunities for volunteers to receive those certifications during the week of March 26-30. Some of the work may need to be done online or in the evening in order to fit everything in, and it will help us sort out the details to know how many volunteers are in need of the classes. Also, BoatUS offers a free online way to receive your safe boating certificate at https://www.boatus.org/free/.

We look forward to seeing you on the water!

Registration is closed.

Be forewarned, the registration is…long! We took all of the required forms and rolled them into one registration so we don’t need to have you fill out forms later on. Please make sure the parent and student are present and have the time to fill out the entire application. Students will need to be prepared to say why they want to be a part of the Spirit of America Program.
